As we get closer to the new year, you may spend some time reflecting on the events that have happened over the past 12 months. Whether these are milestones, or achievements, it’s a time to celebrate the good of the year, and reflect on what we can improve on.
As we spend more time with family during the festive period, it can also be a time where some adoptees decide that the new year is the perfect time to find their biological family.
Being around your friends and family at Christmas
For many of us Christmas is about being around our friends and family. This can be hard for some adoptees as they may often think about their biological family and wonder what they’re doing with their loved ones this time of year and where they are.
Not everyone gets on as great with their adoptive family as others, so Christmas can be a tough time for an adoptee, especially if they are already feeling alone during the festive season.
It’s important to remember that people find Christmas difficult for many reasons, and if you’re feeling down, you’re not alone. However, this feeling of sadness can prompt you to want to start the search of finding your birth family, and often around this time of year adoptees may want to get the ball rolling with finding their birth family, in hopes that next year they have the opportunity to spend it with them.
The decision to find your birth family
Now we know that this often isn’t just an overnight decision, and it can take a lot of thinking and deliberating about whether this is the right path for you. For some it’s a lightbulb moment where they just know it’s what they want or need to do for themselves. It’s at this point you can sit down and decide where you’re going to go from there.
At this stage we advise that you tell someone close to you that you are doing this, as it’s a big decision which is going to come with a lot of emotions. It’s great to have someone there to support you who you trust when you’re going through a process like this one.
